California Employers Plagued with Lawsuits

Private Attorney General Act (PAGA) and Unintentional Consequences
More than 8,000 PAGA lawsuits were filed in 2017 against employers in California for wage, hour, meal break and other valid or invalid violations. Our ability to be flexible with the needs of our employees and their families has left us vulnerable to PAGA lawsuits. These lawsuits are often settled for millions of dollars with a small fraction of the award going to the aggrieved employee. PAGA attorneys seek out mid-to-large employers. One large employer had as many as 17 PAGA suits filed against their company in a single one-year period and another multi-million dollar suit yielded only $1 to the employees – many never knew a PAGA suit had even been filed.

Get the legislative update on the status of CABIA’s discussions with labor. CABIA’s goal is to forge a labor-management agreement that will benefit employers and employees.
