Come to the free Town Hall sponsored by the Workers' Compensation Action Network in conjunction with The Employers' Fraud Task Force featuring Orange County Assistant District Attorney Tony Ferrentino.  He will discuss increased state and local efforts to prosecute workers' compensation fraud, how massive fraud schemes victimize both employers and injured workers in Southern California, and offer suggestions on how to recognize workers' comp fraud.

According to the Orange County District Attorney's Office (OCDA), recent estimates indicate approximately $4 billion in fraudulent workers' compensation activity are filed in California each year.  Statistics indicate the vast majority of this loss is associated with provider fraud involving medical providers and other service professionals.

Last year, the OCDA prosecuted fraudulent cases with estimated chargeable fraud totals over $495 million representing more than 54% of the entire state's prosecutorial efforts.  This translates to an immense amount of workers' compensation fraud being investigated and prosecuted by OCDA.  OCDA recovered over $10 million in restitution for victims of this type of fraud which represents more than 50% of the totals recovered state wide, last year alone.

Workers' Compensation Action Network is a broad-based, statewide coalition that has successfully fought for reforms to provide state and local officials more tools to combat workers' compensation fraud to help meet dual goals of stable costs for employers and higher benefits for injured workers.  Since 2012, Governor Jerry Brown has signed several pieces of legislation designed to improve system efficiency, reduce conflict and litigation, and stem abuses by service providers.  These reforms are delivering higher benefits to California workers while stabilizing employer costs.  Despite these reforms, California's system remains the most costly and litigious in the nation and vulnerable to evolving forms of fraud and abuse, particularly in Southern California. Why Crack Down on Workers' Comp Fraud?

Fraud hurts both employers and injured workers.  It inflates employer costs, clogs the injured workers' compensation court and administrative systems, delays the resolution of claims, diverts limited system resources, and exploits injured workers who do not receive the medical care needed to property heal from their injuries.
